10 years-old Victor auditioning for Tom Sawyer, at the GrandVictor Garber started his first steps as an actor on the stage of the Grand Theatre in London, Ontario when, around 1957, he joined the Children's Theatre program. He has coached by the London Little Theatre, one of Canada's leading amateur theater companies of the time. He began performing children's shows but, shortly after, the talented young actor could be seen on mainstage productions of the theatre company.

In 1964, when only 15 years-old, Victor left his hometown and went to Toronto, to study acting in a intensive summer course at the University of Toronto's Hart House Theatre. He was the youngest student ever to attend that course.
Right after that, his theatrical training continued as he started working for a while with the experimental theater company, Toronto Workshop Productions.

Godspell 1972 Toronto's production From 1959 to 1967, Victor Garber performed in several productions at the Grand. He then tried a musical career with "The Sugar Shoppe" folk rock group. The music occupied his attention for a few years, keeping him away from the theatre. After "Sugar Shoppe" disbanded he landed the leading role in a Toronto production of Godspell and his impressive performance earned him the same role in the film version of the play, in 1973. This performance launched him on a successful stage career in the U.S., where he became an accomplished and respected Broadway actor.
